Background

Mr Joseph Gabriel is a consultant urological surgeon with a subspeciality interest in prostate cancer at both Imperial College Healthcare and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He specialises in robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) for prostate cancer, including the Retzius-sparing robotic prostatectomy approach which has been shown to improve early urinary continence outcomes. He also offers minimally invasive focal therapy for prostate cancer in which he trained as part of the Imperial Prostate group, making him one of few dual-accredited (robotic and focal) prostate cancer surgeons in the UK, able to offer his patients a tailored and personalised approach.

Mr Gabriel qualified from Brighton and Sussex Medical School in 2015, graduating with distinctions and prizes. He subsequently completed his surgical and urological training in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery training in regional robotic urology units including: Eastbourne, Canterbury, Brighton and the Royal Surrey in Guildford, the highest volume single-centre for robotic prostate cancer surgery in the UK. He completed a pelvic urological cancer fellowship in prostate and bladder cancer focusing on robotic prostatectomy and cystectomy at the Royal Surrey before being appointed as a locum Consultant and then substantive Consultant at the age of 33.

He holds a Master’s degree in Surgical Sciences from the University of Edinburgh. He is the lead clinician for urological cancers at Chelsea and Westminster NHSFT and was previously elected to the national executive committee of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) Section of Trainees as a registrar. He has presented research nationally and internationally, with an academic interest in robotic surgery and artificial intelligence. He has authored publications in peer-reviewed journals including the BJUI and has chaired sessions on AI and on surgical training at the BAUS national conference.
