Endometriosis treatment

Our specialist teams at the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital and Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital have extensive experience in diagnosing and treating endometriosis. We understand that symptoms can be complex, long-lasting and have a significant impact on everyday life, which is why our care is always tailored to the individual.

At the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital, endometriosis care is delivered through the Imperial Endometriosis Centre, which is accredited by the British Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE). This accreditation recognises centres that meet high standards of care, including:

  • multidisciplinary teams of experienced specialists

  • regular review and monitoring of patient outcomes

  • sufficient specialist case volumes to maintain expertise

This means you will be cared for by clinicians with the skills, experience and support needed to manage both straightforward and complex cases of endometriosis.

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a long-term condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside the uterus. These growths can develop in areas such as the pelvis, ovaries or bowel, and can lead to inflammation, pain and other symptoms.

Endometriosis affects women and people assigned female at birth, often during their reproductive years, and symptoms can vary greatly from person to person. For some, symptoms may be mild. For others, endometriosis can have a significant impact on physical comfort, fertility, work and everyday life.

Symptoms of endometriosis can include:

  • pelvic or lower abdominal pain

  • pain during or after periods

  • heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding

  • pain during sex

  • bowel or bladder symptoms, particularly during periods

  • difficulty getting pregnant

Symptoms can change over time and don’t always reflect how extensive the condition is. Some women with endometriosis have severe symptoms, while others may have few or none.

Diagnosis of endometriosis

Endometriosis can be challenging to diagnose, and many women experience symptoms for some time before receiving answers. Diagnosis may involve a detailed discussion of symptoms, imaging such as ultrasound or MRI scans, and in some cases minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery. Our specialist teams understand how complex and frustrating this journey can be. We take time to listen and provide thorough assessments, so you feel supported and informed throughout your care.

Treatment we offer

Our experienced consultants take the time to understand how endometriosis is affecting you and will work with you to create a personalised treatment plan. Treatment options may include:

  • medication to help manage pain and reduce inflammation

  • hormonal treatments to help control symptoms by regulating the menstrual cycle

  • minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery, using a laparoscope to remove or treat areas of endometriosis

  • endometrial ablation or resection, in specific situations

  • a hysterectomy, which is usually only considered when symptoms are severe and other treatments have not been effective, and if you do not wish to become pregnant now or in the future

Why choose us?

You will be cared for by experienced consultants with expertise in diagnosing and managing endometriosis. Our consultants work together across specialties to ensure every aspect of your care is considered. We know that endometriosis affects everyone differently, so we take time to understand your symptoms, concerns and goals, to create a tailored treatment plan. This may include medical management, pain relief options, hormonal treatments or surgery where appropriate.
