We are the largest bone marrow transplant unit in the UK for non-malignant blood disorders – principally abnormalities of blood production.
For children with sickle cell disease and thalassaemia, we have a 95 per cent success rate in transplants from family members. We were the world’s first team to deliver transplants from parents who are only a 50% match. Most other hospitals require mothers and fathers to be a 100% match.
Through continual research and by adapting treatments for specific children, we have introduced less toxic approaches to bone marrow transplantation and we accept non-family donors for non-malignant conditions. Our in-depth diagnostic services, advanced MRI techniques and biopsies mean we are able to substantially reduce the risk of complication or damage to the body.
We helped to develop exagamglogene autotemcel, a revolutionary gene therapy based on CRISPR gene editing technology. This treatment is now available for some patients with sickle cell disease and thalassaemia.
