About the service

We offer specialist menopause care that is tailored to you, delivered by experienced consultants at the Lindo Wing, St Mary’s Hospital, the Sainsbury Wing, Hammersmith Hospital and the Wolfson Fertility Centre, Hammersmith Hospital.  Our consultants look at your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and individual concerns to develop a treatment plan that is right for you. Our aim is to help improve your quality of life and support your long‑term health during and after the menopause.

What is menopause and perimenopause?

Menopause is a natural stage of life that happens when your periods stop permanently and you can no longer become pregnant. It usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, though this can vary from person to person. Premature ovarian insufficiency is defined as going through the menopause before the age of 40.

You are considered to have reached menopause when you have not had a period for a total of twelve months. This happens because your ovaries gradually stop producing the hormones oestrogen and progesterone, which regulate your menstrual cycle.

Many women experience symptoms for several years before menopause. This stage is known as perimenopause. During this time, hormone levels fluctuate, periods may become irregular, and symptoms can begin even though periods have not yet stopped.

Common menopause and perimenopause symptoms

Symptoms of menopause and perimenopause can vary widely. Some women have mild or no symptoms, while others find they significantly affect daily life. Common symptoms include:

  • hot flushes and sweats which can occur during the day or at night

  • changes in mood, anxiety or low mood

  • poor sleep

  • changes to periods (heavier, lighter or irregular bleeding)

  • memory or concentration difficulties

  • vaginal dryness or discomfort, painful intercourse

  • joint or muscle aches

  • loss of libido

  • tiredness

  • bladder symptoms

Lower oestrogen levels after menopause can also affect long‑term health, including bone strength, heart health, and sexual wellbeing. Support and treatment can help manage symptoms and reduce future health risks.

Treatments we offer

We offer:

  • body-identical hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

  • pharmacological treatment for women who cannot take oestrogen

  • premature menopause support and direct referral to Wolfson IVF Unit

  • lifestyle and nutrition advice

  • vaginal dilator therapy

We provide every patient with an individualised treatment plan and ongoing support where needed.
