World-class expertise

Our hand surgery team draws their experience from their work in the major trauma centre at St Mary’s Hospital – one of the busiest in the country. Our consultants have experience in treating a vast range of injuries, from working in war zones or dealing with mass casualties through to sports injuries and DIY accidents.

Our St Mary’s site has been designated a high-quality referral centre for complex reconstructive surgery for decades, with expertise in treating both upper and lower limb problems.

As part of a major teaching hospital, our team are involved in the latest research, meaning that we are able to offer the most up-to-date treatment options to patients. This includes the “Hololens” approach where augmented reality technology is used to detect blood vessels, which optimises reconstruction and the potential for a successful outcome.

Your care will be overseen by one of our world-class plastic surgery consultants, either at The Lindo Wing of St Mary’s or at Charing Cross Hospital. We provide a multidisciplinary approach to care, working closely with orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists, rheumatologists and support services such as hand therapy to make sure that we offer you the best opportunity for recovery.

Ongoing support

Once your hand surgery is complete you will continue to be supported throughout your rehabilitation. Your chosen consultant will see you regularly until your discharge to make sure that your recovery is going smoothly. Our nurses are experts in wound care and you will receive specialist support in managing your dressings throughout your recovery if required.

You will also be seen by our hand therapy team who will support you with a hand therapy exercise programme designed to improve your hand and wrist movement as far as possible. This can be done as either an inpatient or an outpatient.

Where appropriate we also offer topical negative pressure wound therapy (VAC therapy) which supports better healing of wounds.
